TreeWorks most common call-out isn’t a fallen or diseased tree — it’s a healthy tree planted in exactly the wrong place, now causing problems that were entirely predictable. Getting placement right costs nothing. Getting it wrong can cost thousands. Here’s where to avoid:

  • Under gutters and eaves. Overhanging branches fill gutters with leaf litter every season and can cause water ingress if left unmanaged. Keep large trees at least 4–5 metres from the roofline.
  • Over underground services. Water mains, gas lines and stormwater pipes run beneath most Canberra suburban gardens.  Before you plant check with Before You Dig Australia  — a tree over a service main may eventually need full removal.
  • Planting too close to pathways and driveways. Surface roots from many species lift pavers and concrete within 10–15 years. Allow at least 2–3 metres from any hard surface, more for larger species.
  • Spaces too small for the mature tree. That liquidambar in the nursery looks great at 2 metres. At maturity it’s 12–15 metres tall and wide. Always research the adult size, not the current pot size.
  • Planting against fences and walls. Roots and expanding trunks exert enormous pressure on structures over time. Keep trees at least 2 metres from any boundary structure.
  • Near solar panels — shade from a growing tree can significantly reduce solar output (see Story 8 in this pack).

Autumn is a wonderful time to plan and plant — the soil is still warm, rain is coming, and trees have months to establish before summer. Get the placement right from the start.
